08/15/2005: "Blog Spree #3: Reading List"

A while back, my friend Julie posted an entry on her blog about her current reading list. It's funny how memory works - for the life of me, I can't remember the name of the bookstore she used to work at back in high school, but I could drive there right now without missing a turn. I remember we'd go see her at work and hang out in the scifi section. I'm fairly positive I discovered Asimov there.

So here's my current and recent reading list. Mostly I'm the bitch of a guy named Dan Simmons right now.

Recently read:
Smokescreen - Kyle Mills
Summer of Night - Dan Simmons
A Winter Haunting (psuedo sequel to Summer of Night) - Dan Simmons
Hardcase - Dan Simmons
Hard Freeze - Dan Simmons (just finished tonight)
The Bourne Legacy - Eric Van Lustbader (based on the character created by Robert Ludlum)
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - J.K. Rowling (updated cause my dumb ass forgot)

Currenty Reading:
Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life (vol. 1) - Bryan Lee O'Malley (Original Graphic Novel, manga style)

Upcoming:
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (vol. 2) - Bryan Lee O'Malley
Hard as Nails - Dan Simmons
Children of the Night - Dan Simmons
Fade - Kyle Mills
The Purpose Driven Life - Rick Warren
God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It - Jim Wallis (as recommended by CubeFarmer)

I might go back and try again with Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson (too dense and I was distracted the first time). Probably some more Dan Simmons as well (Hyperion?) - I'm on a tear with him. He can jump genres at will and mercilously pummel the best authors working in all of them.

We know what Juls is reading...what about the rest of you? No, Scruggy, Penthouse does not count.

It was "The Book Rack". I would love to open one of those on my own in the city. If I ever win the lottery, I'll open a used book store/bakery. There's a new bookstore in Carytown dedicated to Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Mystery. I haven't checked it out yet, but sounds like just the right place for me.

add The Historian to your list, by Elizabeth Kostova

Oh crap, forgot Harry Potter. Updated to add that. You know what's crazy is that almost all of these books have been read in like the last few weeks, mostly after your wedding. Weird, I'm just ripping through right now. It's the summer, TV is crap.

Lovedeath, for the uninitiated, is a collection of novellas that Simmons put out a while back. Title comes from the German word liebstod, which has a meaning that just doesn't quite come across right in English. A younger, more pretentious version of myself wanted very much for our band at the time to be called Lovedeath. Everyone kept looking at me like I was crazy. Ah, youth.

It's obvious why you are Dan Simmons' bitch: you are nostalgic for the days of Lovedeath.

These days I'm reading The Wealth of Nations, various philosophical nonfiction, and trying to score somebody's already-read copy of Harry Potter. Yeah, I'm being cheap.
