08/13/2005: "Blog Spree #1: Nanowrimo.org"
Speaking of longer works, I'm going to kick off the blogging spree by introducing you to Nanowrimo.org. Nanowrimo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It's basically a personal challenge to write a 50,000 word piece of fiction (basically a short novel) in 30 days. You start on November 1st and you have to be finished with the work on November 30th. It's a pace of about 1500 words a day.
Here's the longer version of what it's all about.
I had every intention of doing this last year, but there just wasn't time, since I had just gotten home from the honeymoon. I promised myself (and Mrs. Elf promised me) that I would do it this year. I will.
My friend Adam started this last year, but circumstances kept him from finishing. I hope he's back this year. His wife Sarah (a very talented writer with a brilliant unfinished novel lying around) should do this too, but one of them might have to back off, since their newborn might be upset if Mommy and Daddy are both busy writing novels instead of watching her. (grin)
Karen should do this. The Greatness should do this (although he's in the same newlywed boat I was in last year). I know there are several other good writers reading this who would love to sit down and write a novel but are afraid of the time commitment. Here's your chance. One month, knock it out, and you're a novelist, not a wannabe.
Who's with me?
