09/22/2005: "Lost Premiere"

That was one hell of an opening scene! Talk about it here - spoilers inside, party people.

"Catchy" in the same manner as the flu, actually. Very annoying. Now at least I know who to vent my anger toward.

I was thinking about this episode today at work: What's going to suck about LOST from here out is that the writers can do whatever they please with very few rules. Think about the last episode compared to the first episode, and the conditions of that episode: Who would have thought a year later we'd be listening to "Make your own kind of music" on the next season premiere? The writers have no parameters for what they cannot write, so they can basically B.S. us with off-the-wall possibilities and scenarios, which bugs me.

The song is question is "Make Your Own Kind of Music" by Cass Eliot of The Mamas and the Papas. Very, very catchy.

Try to not listen to that song, Sarah...You'll regret that you did when you hear it over and over and over as you try to sleep...all week long.

I am not reading your comments. I am merely popping in to say I AM AN IDIOT. I missed the season premiere. I was excited about it all week, and then my friend K came in for visit. All day Wednesday, I kept meaning to mention it to her; I was sure she wouldn't mind watching even though she isn't a fan. But then we opened up a bottle of wine, Raul made us some good dinner....and I plum forgot. Thankfully, they are showing the episode again Wednesday, and I have managed to stay 100% awat from spoilers. I'll come back after I've seen it if I've anything to contribute.

I have to agree that the opening scene was pretty great. Also, good question about Desmond having some connection to the other passengers. I hadn't thought of that. Are we going to be subjected to more of Jack's love story this season, or was this a one-time shot? He's a good character and all, but there are others that are much more interesting. I think I got on a Locke kick this summer after watching all of the Millenium episodes on DVD (i.e. Peter Watts).

Okay, so the opening scene was pretty brilliant. I suspect the writers already had this scene planned when they wrote the finale and they didn't want to give away anything, which is why they didn't show anything in the hatch at the end of the season. They should've show the mirror at the bottom - that would've been enough. Or maybe the light. Either way, the main question over the break was "What's in the hatch?" Which, unfortunately, was the same question we'd been asking for half a season, which is why the ending was disappointing. If the question had been "What does the mirror mean?" - now that would've been a good question for the summer.

I would like to take a moment to point out that Lost just moved a little bit more into the sci-fi genre. The underground bunker, the computer command center (old school style, like in T3), the glowing serum. This is where Lost ditches the hair dye and shows its real roots.

A little more about Jack's past, including his very real decision to let one patient die so that his ex could live. Adds a little dark to the Jackster, huh?

The faith vs. science battle that is about to flare up between Jack and Locke. This is going to be a key character arc this season for these two, with lasting effects of the course of the show. Locke is letting Jack call the shots...for now.

Did anyone think that Jack not buying Hurley's story about the numbers was a little Scully, Season Three. Come on, you've seen enough weird shit on the island, this shouldn't surprise you. The cloud of smoke, man, the fuckin' cloud!

And Desmond, of course. Margaret will probably post what she's uncovered about the name Desmond, and her other theories on characters names. It's hard to say if Desmond will stay around long (I kinda suspect death for him pretty soon, actually). But what's interesting is his prior appearance in Jack's life. Will Desmond appear in the other islander's flashbacks in upcoming episodes? We'll see.

But Lost is back! My enthusiasm has been greatly renewed, and lots of new questions got asked. That's what makes it fun.
