Minimum Wage Part Deux

Here's my second round in the minimum wage debate with Raul Groom, a little late as usual. It's been a very busy time at work, and to compund that, havoc has been wrought upon my home. Havoc, thy name is Chrono Cross. Talk about addictive behavior.

Raul's rebuttal to my last statement is here under the Wednesday, August 18th heading.

Also check out his mostly well-reasoned, remarkably long response to the Paul Hamm controversy in the comments from yesterday's entry.

My response to Raul's rebuttal after the jump.

No Grime on the Gold.

This is the best article I've read explaining the Paul Hamm Gold Medal situation. How many football games have been won or lost by bad officiating? It's part of the game. Hamm keeps the Gold, he won it fair and square.

Quote of the day (for yesterday)

"Was it the Alien or the Predator that killed God?"
from Defamer.

Actually, AVP is Paul W. S. Anderson's best film. Not nearly as bad as I expected. Still pretty bad, though.

My Response to Raul

I apologize for the delay in writing my response. I would talk about how much of my time this weekend was taken up by plumbing, but I hate plumbing and don’t really want to give it any print time. Note to Fontaine: The gasket really should fit the mold of the faucet. Just a thought.

Here is my response to Raul Groom’s essay, “The Federal Minimum Wage,” which can be found at http://raulgroom.blogspot.com.

-------------------------

The Federal Minimum Wage (Should Disappear)

Economically speaking, the minimum wage is an artificially created price floor on the cost of labor per hour. That is to say, there is no such thing as a price floor on the cost of labor until someone (read: the government) creates one and upholds it through use of force. This kind of action inherently introduces an artificial barrier to the freedom of market forces.

Raul Groom's Proposition

mood: Antagonistic

My good friend and admirable political sparring partner, Raul Groom, emailed me with a challenge last week. Raul writes a column (pretty much the only readable one) on a website full of Democrat worshipping yokels called Democratic Underground. His challenge was to have an occasional political blog debate - call-and-response style. We've had many a fine email discussion of politics and, though I disagree philosophically with him on many things, he's certainly in the upper echelon of thinking liberal philosophers. I have accepted the invitation and was given the opportunity to choose the first topic of debate.

The inaugural topic is the Minimum Wage.

I chose the topic, Raul goes first. His opening salvo can be found in the blog entry dated August 4th, 2004. Right here:

I should take a moment to note the fact that Raul Groom is a huge Cleveland Browns fan. I recognize that many of you will consider this a rhetorical low blow (I certainly do), but it is my duty to provide you with the grain of salt you will undoubtedly need when reading Groom’s take on the minimum wage.

Enjoy. My response will appear later today or early tomorrow.

Mammals for $300, Alex.

It would appear that I am not the only one who has a strange fascination with the word monkey.

My personal favorite use is jack monkey. Rumor has it that hobo camel uses the phrase occasionally himself.
